He founded CDP in 2000 with an ambition of creating a global economic system that operates within sustainable environmental boundaries and prevents dangerous climate change. CDP represents over 650 investors with assets of over $130 trillion. CDP also uses the authority of the combined buying power of over 200 large corporations with annual purchases of over $6 trillion, to persuade over 23,000 large companies to report on their greenhouse gas emissions as well as strategy on climate change, water use and the drivers of deforestation directly in CDP databases. CDP make most of this data available to the public and to service providers like Bloomberg, MSCI, S&P and many others. In addition, over 1,000 large cities and over 100 states and regions with aggregate over 1 billion inhabitants report annually on their environmental performance through CDP, which is a charitable organisation operating in 110 counties in six languages from nine offices around the world. He has served as a member of the Environmental Research Group of the UK Faculty and Institute of Actuaries. Paul has authored various publications including the book Beautiful Corporations published in 2000 by Financial Times Prentice Hall. The book introduced the concept of sustainability product marketing which is growing in significance as a force in contemporary commerce. He is Chair of Giki Zero supporting over one million employees to manage down their emissions with clients including Accenture, NatWest, BBC and Deloitte. He co-presents the leading climate change podcast ‘Outrage and Optimism’ alongside Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac, with over 5 million downloads. He is an advisor to leading reporting software providers Workiva and Persefoni. Named a Time Magazine Top 100 climate change leader in 2023 alongside Bill Gates and John Kerry.
